“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic wtiness”
— Peter Levine

What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing was developed by Peter Levine and is a body-centered approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. Our minds hold the stories of what has happened to us, but it is our bodies that hold the feelings of all that has occurred. So even though we may have talked through a traumatic event, our body is still responding as if it is currently experiencing the threat. When we befriend our body and it’s experience, welcoming its sensations into awareness, then we can begin to transform old patterns and shift out of trauma into authentic well-being.

Using body centered dialogue and gentle exploration of physical sensation and movement, these old experiences and emotions can be gradually released from the body. In the video below, Peter Levine introduces the principles of Somatic Experiencing.
